Adequate medical care is available throughout the country but is not up to the standards of industrialized countries.
Recent medical and dental exams should ensure that the traveler is in good health. Carry appropriate health and accident insurance documents and copies of any important medical records. Bring an adequate supply of all prescription and other medications as well as any necessary personal hygiene items, including a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses if needed.
Yellow fever: Although yellow fever does not occur in Reunion, an official yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required depending on your itinerary. Requirement: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age coming from infected areas. Other vaccines: Depending on your itinerary, your personal risk factors, and the length of your visit, your health care provider may offer you vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, influenza, or a one-time polio booster if you haven't previously received one for travel. Routine immunizations, such as those that prevent tetanus/diphtheria or "childhood" diseases, should be reviewed and updated as needed. Malaria: Malaria does not present risk in this country.
Insect-borne diseases: Diseases transmitted by insects are not generally a problem in this country. Food- and water-borne diseases: Quite a few diseases, including hepatitis A and typhoid fever, are transmitted by unsanitary food handling procedures and contaminated water. Food and beverage precautions are essential in order to reduce chance of illness. Anti-diarrheal drugs may be prescribed by your provider. Marine hazards include corals, jellyfish, and sea urchins. Heed posted warnings at organized beaches, and do not bathe at unmarked, unpatrolled beaches.
